Racism and Prejudice

Racism & Prejudice

“We must come to a point where we realize the concept of race is a false one. There is only one race, the human race”, says Dan Aykroyd. Asians, Caucasians, Africans, Arabs, Indians, etc. are not different races. Rather, they are different ethnicities of human race. We may have different cultural backgrounds, religions, skin color and even the language we used may differ from one another; nevertheless all of us belong to one human race.

Racism & prejudice is caused by Ignorance. We always fear what we don’t understand and many times we misinterpret those of different cultures. This fear leads to anger and ferocity. This is because when one is fearful, they have a tendency to make themselves feel superior to others by making the one who they dread feel degrade.

It is also caused by parental influence or upbringing. Children learned from their parents. “How you act is how they act”. If they taught their children tolerance, respect, benevolence, and love for people it would be much better-off. Well as for me, my parents have taught me that all human being as it was said in the bible, are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1: 26 – 27). And that God does not show bigotry or preference and neither should we.

Furthermore, there are the effects of racism & prejudice to every individual in the society. They are able to alter from being severe to very slight. The smallest affect consist of the feeling of anxiety, fear, and anger of the victim. As racism continues the effects to the victim becomes severe. He or she may develop phobia of the racists group of people. They end up despising those people and may feel ashamed of their own race. It may also lead the victim to act aggressively and withdraw him or herself from the world. It is probably, the most severe effects of racism.

Racism & prejudice is a negative thing. And everyone should be treated as people, no matter what race, religion, gender, etc. Racism is still prevalent and I don’t really know if there is a solution for this. Sure education and learning to understand and tolerate others who are different from us would help, but there will always be people in every culture who would be less open – minded and try to spread their fears. (“Fears that leads to anger and anger to hate”).
